Financial support for completing your manuscript
The Virginia G. Piper Creative Research Fellowship is a competitive, $5,000 merit-based fellowship providing graduate students in ASU's Creative Writing Program with financial support to complete their creative writing manuscripts as they approach their final year of study.
Each year, the Virginia G. Piper Center awards one Creative Research Fellowship in order to defray students' cost of living and allow greater focus on their writing.
$5,000 Creative Research Fellowship. The Creative Research Fellowship is intended to provide financial support, and does not include tuition or health insurance.
To be eligible for the Creative Research Fellowship, individuals must be graduate students currently enrolled in ASU's Creative Writing program in their second year. Individuals must also be in good academic standing and on track to complete their degree by the Spring semester of the following year. First and third year students are ineligible to apply. While students may apply for both a Global Fellowship and a Creative Research Fellowship, only one fellowship may be awarded.
Additionally, given the nature of this fellowship, students who will be working full-time during the dispersement of the award are ineligible to apply (though exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis). Students who are working part-time should include detailed reasoning for this decision in their vision and impact statement (see below for more details).
Within thirty days of successfully defending their thesis, students must submit an essay about the impact of the fellowship (responding to a written prompt), any photographs or other documentation, and a 1 - 2 page excerpt of the work. Photos and essay excerpts may be used on the Piper Center's website, and will be credited appropriately.
To apply for the Creative Research Fellowship, please prepare and complete the following materials:
More information about each application component is available in the application instructions.
All materials should be professionally formatted (with the last name and page number in the footer of each page) and submitted as a multi-page, single .pdf document to Managing Director Angie Dell via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications should be titled "LastName FellowshipType" (e.g. "Smith Residency"). Late applications will not be accepted.
An independent judge will determine the award recipient. All awards are based purely on merit.
