The Virginia G. Piper Global Teaching Fellowship is the Center’s longest running international program, now entering its thirteenth year in partnership with the University Scholars Program at the National University of Singapore.
During the summer of 2018, one or two ASU MFA students will have the opportunity to live and write in Singapore and teach creative writing classes for honors undergraduate and high school students at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The 6-week undergraduate course meets twice a week, and the high school course runs for two weeks. A one-day teaching opportunity for additional compensation may also be offered at an Arts Camp program through Singapore’s Ministry of Education.
Fellowship recipients will be required to meet once per month with Angie Dell and Matt Bell during the spring semester to help prepare for their engagement abroad and to develop an introduction to global literature, particularly the literature of Southeast Asia. They will also be required to submit a detailed syllabus and meet with Matt Bell several times throughout the spring semester in preparation for their teaching commitments.
$7,000 Piper Global Fellowship (amount subject to change based on current airfare prices and estimated costs). The Global Fellowship Award covers fellowship expenses including airfare, meals, utilities, other personal living expenses, visa and passport fees, immunizations, and local transportation; and includes additional funding intended to help support student expenses throughout the summer. Any costs that exceed the fellowship amount will be at the student’s expense. Comfortable, apartment-style housing will be provided by NUS.
To be eligible for the Global Teaching Fellowship, individuals must be graduate students currently enrolled in ASU's Creative Writing program in their first or second year.
While students may apply for both the Global Residency and the Global Teaching Fellowships, only one fellowship may be awarded, and separate applications are required for each.
Students are ineligible to receive the same fellowship two years in a row.
Within thirty days of completing the fellowship, students must submit an essay about their international fellowship experience (responding to a provided writing prompt), 3-5 photos, and a program evaluation. Late responses will render students ineligible for future fellowships.Photos and essay excerpts may be used on the Piper Global website, and will be credited appropriately.
Upon completion, teachers will also be evaluated by their students and the NUS staff, and these evaluations may impact eligibility for future fellowships, grants, and opportunities through the Piper Center.

Treat this process as a creative project proposal, and not a job application: you must convince the judges that your unique proposal deserves the fellowship award, rather than trying to meet a certain set of expected criteria. All materials should be professionally formatted (with the last name and page number in the footer of each page) and submitted as a multi-page, single .pdf document to Managing Director Angie Dell via email at email@example.com. Applications should be titled "LastName FellowshipType" (e.g. "Smith Residency"). Late applications will not be accepted.
