In this class we will discuss the different paths for publishing your work (any genre), and delve into the two major areas self-publishers need to be aware of: creating a quality product, and basic self-promotion. In addition, we will critique the first five pages of any students who feel they are ready for feedback.

Part One – The 4.5 Paths to Publishing (what each one entails)

There are 4 legitimate ways to publish – plus one illegitimate, career-killing path. We will examine all options, what they require of the author, and what the author can expect in return.

Part Two – Creating a Quality Product (print & e-book)

We will walk through the process of formatting a book for print, eBook, and creating a cover.

Part Three – Branding & Promotion (an overview)

We will discuss basic publicity/promotion for books, including creating a brand statement for each student.

Part Four – Have You Got It? (peer-critiquing the students’ first 5 pages)

One of the most common mistakes made by self-publishing authors lies in writing that does not meet today’s styles and standards. In this period, we will evaluate each other’s manuscripts based on what is accepted in today’s market.

Pre-Workshop Requirements:

Students should have a completed manuscript for this workshop. A rough draft is acceptable.

This workshop involves the peer-critiquing of work.
